1. Read Chapters 1 and 2. What evidence do you find that at the time of his marriage Hosea was already conscious of his prophetic calling?
2. Was Hosea aware when he married Gomer that she would prove to be unfaithful? What has Hosea’s bitter experience got to do with God and His people?
3. What can we learn from this story?
4. Gomer, having proved unfaithful, sinks to a position of a slave. Hosea, loving her still, redeemed her but kept her for a time under discipline. How does the prophet use this to illustrate God’s love and faithfulness?
5. How does Hosea show that Israel has committed ‘Spiritual Adultery’?
6. What promise is given in Hosea 2:14-23 of the final triumph of God’s love? How is it to be achieved? Does this chapter in anyway illustrate the conduct and the one sure hope of God’s people today?

In the New Testament there are actually three main words for love. They are:
Philia: This is love or affection from family, friends and others with whom you share
something in common.
Eros: This love is based upon beauty, passion and pleasure. The English word erotic
comes from eros.
Agape: This is God’s love. It is unconditional, unselfish and enduring.
2. 1 John 4:7 tells us “love comes from God”. If God expresses and experiences love
within himself; How are we like God? Why did God make you and me? Where does
love come from?
3. What arguments are used in 1 John 4:7-8 to show that true Christians must love one an-

Questions for group discussion and individual reflection:

Note: The people who heard the opening line of this parable would have been in no doubt about where it was headed. We should not let our modem stereotypes of Pharisees cloud the fact that the uniform expectations of Jesus' audience was that the Pharisee was the hero and the tax collector the villain.

1. Focusing on v10, discuss together what modern parallels there might be to the two men in this story. We are looking for real saints and real sinners to understand the impact of this story.

2. What would the first hearers have made of the Pharisees (v11-12) and Tax Collectors (v13)?

Note: While the words the Pharisee prays seem a bit self congratulatory to our ears, there is probably a genuineness about them. He is praying the truth, in fact he is a very good man - he fasts more than is required, and tithes more than is necessary. However, the fact that he stands by himself, might give us a hint that all is not right.

3. V14a is a shock assessment by Jesus for the first hearers. How do you think ,they would react to this?

4. What is the point being made by Jesus with the parable? What really is wrong with the Pharisee's stance and right with the Tax Collectors?

5. With whom do we really identify in this story? Try to think of ways in which "we exalt ourselves". Share these with the group.

6. What should our response to God be? How will this be worked out in our relationships? Pray that we might humble ourselves and accept the justification that is offered by Grace. Pray that this might characterize our church.

Questions for group discussion and individual reflection:

Note: in the ancient Middle East people travelled late at night and expected hospitality which was never refused. Villages shared around the baking of bread from house to house. The hypothetical situation in v 5 - 7 would have left you saying. “No I can’t imagine that happening”.

Read Luke 11:5 - 7 again and think of a situation in our culture where help would be requested, where there is no chance the person who received the request would say “no”.
Read v 8 which speculates on the motives of the friend who will most certainly get up and help. What point do you think is being made here?
Now go back and read, v 1 - 4 for the context and consider what point, the parable is making. How does this affect the way you approach praying “The Lord’s Prayer”?
Read v 9 -13. What more do you learn here about the way in which we should approach prayer?
Consider the contrast between the motives of the friend in v 8 and the motives of God in answering the prayer implied in v 13 - ”how much more”.
Why is the “Holy Spirit” v 13 singled out as the thing God will give us when we ask?
Share some things you should boldly ask of God. Then share how you might ask “shamelessly” for these things. Then pray boldly and shamelessly and don’t forget to thank God for his willingness to answer our needs.

Share your reactions to the story. How does this story offend our sense of justice?
Read the story? How would you feel if you were the first group hired? How would you feel if you were the last group hired? Share in a group what it would have been like to be in the different groups?
What do you think the parable teaches the earlier more deserving group v13 -14a and the later less deserving group v14b -15?
What do you think the parable teaches about all disciples? See v16
In our world today, who would be the most undeserving of God's blessing of salvation? What does this parable say about them?
How might this grace inform our understanding & practice of our faith? What does this radical grace mean for the very way we relate to our family and friends?
Pray for the undeserving ones in our lives, that they might come to know the radical grace for them; spend some time praying for them by name?

"What is Faithful Worship" - Psalm 24

Background on Psalm 24: Originally a psalm of ascent, a responsive psalm for pilgrims to Jerusalem.

1. Who is this God?
    The great creator
     Sovereign Lord of history
     God's presence is not limited to the temple.
     This is a God who will not brook compartments in the lives of believers.
     John 1:14 "The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth."

2. What does God Require?
Romans 12:1 "Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living

Who Did Jesus Die For? - 2 Corinthians 4:1-7

Three Basic Answers.

1. Jesus died for all -> unlimited atonement
    Arminianism (position of John Wesley)
    See 1 Tim 2:4-6; 1 John 2:2; Heb 2:9

2. Jesus died for some -> limited atonement
      Calvinism (comes from the teaching of John Calvin)
      Summarised by the acronym T.U.L.I.P.
          Total Depravity
          Unconditional Election
          Limited atonement
          Irresistible Grace
          Perseverance of the Saints
      See Matt 1:21; Matt 20:28; John 10:27; John 15:26; John 6:44
      Remnant concept off the O.T. & the concept of the elect from the N.T.

3. Jesus died for all and some -> unlimited limited atonement
      Modified Calvinism
      See 1 Tim 4:10
      Charles Spurgeon held this position. In a sermon titled "General and yet Particular" delivered on Sunday morning, April 24, 1864 he said, "...there is a general influence for good flowing from the mediatorial sacrifice of Christ and yet its special design and definite object is the giving of eternal life to as many as the Father gave Him."
      Five ways every person in the world has benefited from Christianity, from the death of Jesus.
        - our human dignity and worth
        - charity and welfare
        - the rule of law
        - private property rights
        - public education

4. What does all this mean for you?
      God chose us, we did not choose God. We exist to glorify and serve God
      There is a genuine open door of salvation available to all of us.
      God wants to use believers as partners in bringing the gospel of Jesus Christ to others.

2. What does God need to do in us? See 2 Cor 4:4-6; John 3:1-21.

4. How does 1 Tim 4:10 and 2 Peter 2:1 help the discussion?
5. Read and discuss the implications of 'the great chain of election' at Romans 8:28-39.
6. How do we partner with God in evangelism? See 2 Cor 4:1-7; 1 Cor 3:5-9 and Rom 10:9-17.
7. Has the particular benefits of forgiveness and salvation through Jesus' atoning death been applied to your life? Do you repent of sin and believe in Jesus?
8. Pray for people you know who do not know Jesus and pray for opportunities to have a conversation about faith matters with them and opportunities to share the gospel with them.

TEAR is a Christian development organisation that works in 24 countries with a range of development projects being done by Christian partner agencies. Has a small program among indigenous communities in Australia. A big part of our mission is also to educate Australian Christians about a biblically shaped response to poverty and injustice.

2 Corinthians 5:11-21

Ambassadors of Reconciliation - what is the message people would look at our lives and say we are representing? Is it that God has reconciled the world to himself through Jesus (vs 19).
Shalom - means more than the absence of war. It means a completeness and wholeness with God, with others and with creation.
- In Genesis 3 we are told that God's good creation was spoiled by sin. The shalom of the garden of Eden was destroyed.
- People's relationship with God was broken.
- This resulted in the relationships between people, and between people and the environment being broken.
- Isaiah 9:6 prophesying about the coming of Jesus, describes Christ as the `Prince of Shalom'.
What are the root causes of poverty, injustice and marginalization? Broken relationships from the fall.

Broken relationships with God: Denying God's existence , materialism, worshipping false God's
Broken relationships with self: low self esteem/God complex.
Broken relationships with others: self-centeredness, exploitation, abuse of others, participating in systems that allow exploitation to take place.
Broken relationships with creation: poor stewardship of creation, laziness/workaholic, materialism.

Why did Jesus come to the world? Colossians 1:19-20 ^"For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed onthe cross."

So what does this mean to us sitting in All Saints Greensborough?
Four key areas for us to look at in our lives and consider how we respond.
- how we pray
- how we invest our time
- how we spend our money
- how we vote (given that voting shapes our society in ways that are either in line with the kingdom or not).

Questions for further study:
1. What were the people trying to accomplish through their building of the city of Babylon?
2. What significance does Babylon play in the rest of Scripture both as an actual place & as a metaphorical people in rebellion against God? (see also Dan 1:1-2; Rev 18)
3. What were the Babylonians putting their faith & security in other than God? How does this happen today?
4. Why did God confuse their languages and scatter the people? How do we still try to build `towers of Babel' today?
5. How are you tempted to trust in things other than God? What can you do to 'put God at the centre'?
6. How does God want us to pursue unity? What brings unity? (see also Eph 2:11-22) Is there any unity between Zion & Babylon? (see Rev 18:4-8)

1.    Read Genesis 6:1- 8:14 to remind yourself of the details of the narrative. What do we learn here concerning (a) the fallen condition of human nature and (b) God's attitude to sin.
2.    Read Genesis 8:15 - 9:17 What is Noah's response as he comes safely out of the ark? Has mankind's heart been changed by the flood?
3.    What do we learn here concerning the provision of a way of salvation? Matthew 24:37-39; 1 Peter 3:20; 2 Peter 2:5
4.    Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord. What were his characteristics? Hebrews 11:7
5.    Do you take God's judgement seriously? If not, why not? Do you feel embarrassed telling your friends about a God who is judge? What affect do you think a knowledge of God's judgement might have on our lives?
